Completed in 2020, Mira San Francisco is one of the city’s most iconic new residential towers. Rising above the skyline with a dramatic twisting form, the building was designed by Studio Gang Architects, in collaboration with Perry Architects Inc. and Barcelon Jang Architecture. The project reflects Jeanne Gang’s renowned philosophy of using design to connect people, communities, and the natural environment. Constructed by Lendlease, Mira has quickly become a landmark of contemporary architecture in San Francisco. The tower’s distinctive façade is not only visually striking but also purposeful, maximizing light and air while creating dynamic city views. Complementing this architectural ingenuity, the landscape architecture by INTERSTICE Architects emphasizes sustainability, livability, and the integration of natural materials in urban spaces. One of the key features of the outdoor areas is the use of site furnishings crafted from Black Locust Lumber. Custom wood benches and other elements provide inviting spaces for residents and visitors to gather, rest, and connect. The choice of Black Locust is deliberate: Durability – Black Locust is one of the hardest North American hardwoods, naturally resistant to rot, decay, and insects. Unlike chemically treated lumber, it offers longevity outdoors without the need for toxic treatments. Sustainability – As a rapidly growing and renewable species, Black Locust contributes to eco-friendly construction practices. Its use in Mira underscores a commitment to reducing the environmental footprint of urban developments. Aesthetic Warmth – The natural grain and golden-brown tone of Black Locust provide warmth and contrast to the modern glass and steel of Mira’s architecture, balancing urban sophistication with organic beauty.
