Black Locust Deck Tiles in New York City | Parsons School of Design

About the project

New York City is looking for innovative alternatives to tropical hardwoods and composite decking, and Black Locust deck tiles are a strong answer. For this project, Parsons School of Design at The New School worked with Black Locust Lumber to turn an outdoor area into a welcoming public space where New Yorkers can gather, relax, or take a break in the fresh air.

These modular deck tiles lay out in sections, so they fit the space without a permanent build. Parsons handled the installation, and when winter arrived the tiles lifted out just as easily. After storage, the same reusable deck tiles go back down each spring, season after season. Seating built from refurbished lumber gives reclaimed wood a second life. Black Locust is a naturally rot-resistant, durable hardwood that needs no chemical treatments, making it a sustainable replacement for tropical hardwoods and composites in high-traffic New York City spaces. Working with Parsons and The New School was a great start, and we’re eager to bring Black Locust deck tiles to commercial projects, boardwalks, rooftops, and public access ways all around the city.
