On a steep hillside in the Southern California foothills, the property owners wanted to move away from tropical hardwoods and find a domestic alternative that delivered on both sustainability and longevity. Black locust was the answer. A naturally durable, domestically sourced hardwood, it now carries the entire site: horizontal square edge cladding on the retaining walls, decking along the walkway, and heavy timber stair treads that climb through the plantings.
