In late 2017, the Office of Community Investment and Infrastructure (OCII), the successor to the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency (SFRA), selected BRIDGE Housing Corporation and HomeRise through a competitive process to develop and operate new permanent supportive housing for formerly homeless individuals on Mission Bay South Block 9. The development came at a critical time in San Francisco’s strategy to address homelessness and strengthen economic recovery in the wake of the pandemic. It represented a citywide collaboration between OCII, HomeRise, BRIDGE Housing, the Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing, and HealthRight 360, combining resources and expertise to expand the City’s permanent supportive housing stock, create jobs, and invest in sustainable infrastructure. More than just a housing development, the project is built around the idea of stability, health, and connection. Residents benefit from 24-hour reception, indoor and outdoor community spaces, and a range of onsite supportive services that include case management, clinical care, and medical services. At the ground level, a public community garden extends the project into the wider neighborhood, encouraging edible plant cultivation, healthy routines, and opportunities for social connection. The architectural design integrates into Mission Bay’s transformation from an industrial area to a vibrant residential district. Careful attention was given to scale, unit articulation, materials, and colors to create a sense of place that feels both contemporary and welcoming. A central courtyard forms the heart of the project, extending the tidal nature of the bay through bioswales planted with native species to manage stormwater naturally. The courtyard connects to Bridgeview Way through a community garden that offers residents and neighbors a shared green space, bringing nature directly into the urban fabric. Sustainability and resilience were central to the project. The development incorporates high-performance exterior envelopes and windows, enhanced ventilation systems that improve indoor air quality, rooftop solar energy systems with battery backup, and recycled water infrastructure. The ground floor was elevated in anticipation of sea-level rise, and engineered walks and ramps are designed to maintain accessibility even in the event of future ground subsidence. Every element of the design contributes to a healthier living environment and a more resilient building that can serve residents for generations. Amenities were designed to support both individual stability and community building. The development offers a resident courtyard with seating areas, fitness trail, dog run, shared laundry facilities, a community lounge, and a demonstration kitchen for group activities. Secure bicycle parking and a large community garden further enhance the sense of shared space, while onsite case management and medical services provide the direct support residents need as they transition into stable housing. Our team was proud to play a role in this transformative project by supplying the lumber used in construction. The choice of durable and responsibly sourced wood reflected the project’s commitment to sustainability and long-term resilience. The lumber we provided contributed not only to the building’s structural integrity, but also to its ability to align with San Francisco’s broader goals for environmentally conscious growth and investment in materials that support both people and the planet. HomeRise at Mission Bay now stands as a landmark development in San Francisco—a place where secure housing, supportive services, and sustainable design come together. It is more than a building; it is a foundation for stability, dignity, and community. By providing the lumber that helped bring it to life, we are proud to have contributed to a project that changes lives, strengthens neighborhoods, and demonstrates what is possible when social responsibility and resilient design go hand in hand.
