Feature Project - BronXscape, Bronx, N.Y.
In the spring of 2009 students from Parsons The New School for Design put the finishing touches on BronXscape, an urban rooftop garden and outdoor kitchen in the Bronx for young adults transitioning out of foster care. Completed under The Design Workshop, the school’s elective design-build studio course, the project tops a new building run by the Neighborhood Coalition for Shelter, a nonprofit organization that will provide low-income housing and education for 46 residents. Black Locust Lumber provided a wide array of milled Black Locust wood for the project. You can see how prominent a role the wood played in the pictures below.

The versatility of Black Locust wood is evident in this picture. You can see that it is used on the decking and pergola to the right, the planters and fencing to the left and the siding straight ahead. |

We milled the lumber to architectural specifications. All the Parsons students had to do was cut the boards to length and install. They did a wonderful job of designing and constructing the planter/bench combination. |

This wall put a definitive end along one side of the project. The bench provides a wonderful place to relax, the planter wall provides additional space to grow herbs. |

Black Locust is the overwhelming choice of materials you see here. Its versatility, durability, and sustainability cannot be matched by any other wood - foreign or domestic. |
